I just can't do it. I cannot bring myself to buy those individual, prepackaged 'goodies' for my son's lunches. So many things run through my mind in the instant that my son's eyes meet the sparkly, neon, glittery 'foods' that are conveniently aimed at the tip of his nose... all that wasted paper, plastic wrap, packaging, the sugar and/or glucose, the red dye # 9, the energy, the resources and the time taken to create them, the factory workers who work shift work to get it to where it is...in front of me and my 5 year old son. All this for the two minutes or so that it will take to unwrap, consume and somehow digest it. Not in my cart Sally.

Trying to instil a love of whole, real food in a world that is bent on sugar pushing and chemical colouring takes a creative mind... and Pinterest. Did I ever tell you about my love affair with that amazing, time suck of a website? For all its addiction-forming faults it is a goldmine when researching ways to get your kids to eat 'what all the other kids eat' but with ingredients you actually recognize.

The latest school-snack-hack attempt was the fruit roll. Again, credit to this recipe (found via Pinterest) goes to Our Best Bites food blogger where the recipes (and many more!) can be found here. These sweet jewels were made with 2 ingredients... TWO! 3 cups of ripe strawberries and a half cup of honey, blitzed in the blender until smooth and poured onto a lined cookie sheet... the only caveat is that it takes about 8 hours for these chewy strips to be good and done. The idea is to basically dry the puree in your oven on the lowest heat setting possible (mine was at 170°F).

The variety for these fruit roll ups is as endless as the fruit combo possibilties. For the next batch, I think I will try out an exotic mango lassie recipe!  I will free up my oven during the daytime, however, and whip this recipe up in the evenings and set it to 'dry' before I go to bed. Fruit roll ups for breakfast, anyone? These are simple, elegant and wholesome and best of all, they have been kid tested and kid approved!
